Instrument-Playing Robots

The Cabot Robot Drums Along On Real Instruments

The Cabot robot may look like a sort of mechanized spider but this unique gadget may just become a musician's best friend. Designed as a percussion robot this automaton is purpose-built to play the cajón, the versatile box-shaped drumming instrument often used by buskers. The robot is controlled easily through a mobile app and footswitch and can be perfectly set to provide accompanying rhythm to whatever the user wants to sing, play or rap. Custom beats can be stored and programmed to the Cabot robot through the mobile app and can be shared with other users to download.

Created by Hideaki Iio, the device was inspired by lio's love for music and his inability to find a competent drum machine or musical app. This led lio to develop a physical robot as it could be easily customized and would be able to produce an organic noise through an instrument.
