Kris Lamba Uses Dissolved Polystyrene to Create 'Fragments'

Brighton-based designer Kris Lamba channeled an unfortunate instance of resource waste as the inspiration for a line of beautiful sculptural bronze vases. Proving that no material is worth discarding mindlessly, Kris Lamba built his line 'Fragments' by dissolving polystyrene in a self-made and safe "concentrated solution from orange rinds." The designer found the material in abundance outside of his studio.

The bronze vases take on beautiful asymmetric shapes that resemble the structural narrative of "partially melted polystyrene forms." Each piece in the collection of bronze vases is completely unique due to its formation process. Kris Lamba coated his polystyrene shapes in wax, which were covered in clay, and then fired in a kiln for the creation of the bronze cast. As a result, the highly experimental and sustainable value in the bronze vases makes the sculptural product more impressive.
