Elegant Respiring Timepieces

The 'Breathing Clock' Inflates with Air to Show the Time

In an effort to show how time can be perceived differently, designer Max Schmidt created the 'Breathing Clock.' Schmidt's clock eschews traditional timekeeping systems and uses a balloon to show the time. A bag contained with a sleek canister inflates and deflates to indicate the time. As a result, the clock looks like it's breathing while it's operating.

The Breathing Clock was designed to help those with a creative workflow. Schmidt created the clock as a loose interpretation of time. As a result, the clock frees its users from the rigidity of traditional timepieces.

The balloon works by inflating and deflating in cycles. After inflating, the balloon takes about half an hour to deflate. Air slowly leaks out of the balloon until it's fully collapsed.
