In his ‘Defender’ series, Friend depicts warrior-like silhouettes using an array of materials. While the figures’ outlines never change, Friend manages to make each portrait different by varying the contents of each silhouette. Oddly enough, his choice in materials also convey different time periods, with "defenders" from the medieval era to futuristic super soldiers making an appearance. For such a seemingly simple series, it’s tremendously engrossing.
