Cinema-Inspired Hideaways

The 'Box on a Rock' Home has Windows That Resemble a Movie Screen

The 'Box on a Rock' home aims to celebrate its surroundings. The beautiful Californian abode offers cinematic views of Sonoma Valley through large windowed walls.

Design team Schwartz and Architecture utilized an odd location for a house to feature the beautiful vistas it is perched over. The aptly named 'Box on a Rock' house was designed as a simple and rectangular structure. Its design however was later altered to resemble a diamond to better suit the land it was built on.

The home's large walls allow for bigger windows to outline the view of the valley. The smaller entrance of the house also acts as a metaphor for a camera viewfinder, framing the view that the windows ultimately uncover as you walk through the home.
