Lifesaving Bicycle Helmets

The High-Tech 'Black Box Helmet' Improves Cyclist Safety

The so-called 'Black Box helmet' is a bicycle helmet that is fitted with built-in sensors and smartphone functionality to provide useful data following a crash. The helmet was developed by a team of students at Oregon State University in collaboration with Intel.

The potentially life-saving Black Box helmet is equipped with a variety of features including accelerometers, speakers, a microphone and a LED headlamp. This package of features both provide cyclists with information while they are cycling, while also offering up data in the event of an accident.

In the event of a crash, the helmet will talk to the rider and ask them if they're okay. If they say 'no' or fail to respond, the helmet will automatically contact emergency services. When used in conjunction with a smartphone, the helmet can put wearers through medical tests to examine the extent of their injury.
