Biodegradable Plastic Wrap Alternatives

This Edible Film Packaging is Made from a Milk Protein

The American Chemical Society recently announced that it has created a biodegradable plastic wrap alternative that could help reduce packaging waste. Not only is the new packaging better for the planet, but it can also save humans from consuming the potentially harmful compounds that can leach from plastic film into foods.

Presented by researchers at the 252nd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, the new packaging is a biodegradable plastic wrap alternative that is made from citrus pectin, salt and a milk protein called casein. The edible film is a great alternative to plastic wrap because it provides a new use for excess milk powder, there are no harmful chemicals present that could leach into foods and it even keeps products fresher than traditional cling wrap.

While the casein packaging likely will not make it to store shelves for about three more years, the invention demonstrates the potential for more natural packaging solutions.
