This Bench Sculpture Offers Bees Rest and Encourages Interspecies Friendship

This bench sculpture was designed to bring people and honeybees together. Currently raising finances via crowdfunding site Voordekunst, the Buzzbench helps humans get over their bee-related fears.

Made from bamboo stalks and cane, the public bench sculpture features curving boards arranged in the shape of a flower. This structure will not only attract endangered honey bees, but will also look pretty to people. Even though many fear getting stung, wild bees generally won't attack.

The slots between boards give bees a place to rest as well. According to Buzzbench's designer AnneMarie van Splunter, "Wild bees spend a large part of their lifespan looking for a suitable place to lay their eggs." The artist is hoping to get the bench built in a park in the Netherlands. She hopes it will also be used as an educational tool.
