Smart Beehive Apps

The 'APiS Hive' Combines a Counter, Hive Scale and Monitor into One Bee App

Not only does this hive and connected bee app make beekeeping easier and more accessible, but it also keeps the honey bees safer and helps them to thrive. The APiS modular beehive app was created by Miguel Bento who combined his passed-down passion for beekeeping with his academic and professional knowledge in electronic engineering.

Each smart beehive has multiple components that transfer information to the keeper's smartphone. The first component is a Bee Counter, which tracks the number of bees coming in and out of the hive as well as any wasp intruders. The Hive Scale measures the honey produced and alerts the bee app if the hive has fallen over. Finally, the Hive Monitor is the home base that detects humidity, temperature and even if the Queen Bee is laying eggs.

Each APiS Hive is also uniquely coated in cork, keeping it 50 percent warmer through colder months, which is vital for maintaining these important insects' roles in the ecosystem. This bee app takes traditional beekeeping and moves it into the future, hopefully encouraging younger generations to take a greater interest.
Trend Themes
1. Smart Beekeeping - Combining technology with beekeeping creates opportunities for innovative, data-driven methods that can improve bee colony health and increase honey production.
2. Modular Hive Systems - Modular beehive systems, such as the APiS Hive, offer flexibility and customization for beekeepers to better manage and monitor the health and productivity of their bees.
3. Sustainability in Beekeeping - Emphasizing sustainable practices in beekeeping, such as using warmer hive coatings and monitoring bee colony health to minimize use of chemicals, can help protect the vital role bees play in our ecosystem.
Industry Implications
1. Agriculture - Smart beehive technology can help farmers and apiarists collect data on bee colonies and improve honey production, potentially increasing crop yields through increased pollination.
2. Technology - The integration of electronic engineering and modular design into beehives creates opportunities for technology companies to develop and market innovative beehive monitoring and management systems.
3. Eco-tourism - Smart beehive technology can enhance the educational value of beekeeping tours and experiences, attracting environmentally-conscious tourists and supporting sustainable beekeeping practices.
