The traditional music box has been repackaged with Beautiful Dreamer. A satirical take on hopeful thoughts and feelings, Beautiful Dreamer envisions such musical devices as grenades that does not actually explode when the pin is pulled (thankfully). Instead, it only plays one of two songs once: Beautiful Dreamer or America the Beautiful. Both are given a haunting quality through this art piece.
Created by Canadian artist Maskull Lasserre, Beautiful Dreamer was inspired by his time with the Canadian forces in Afghanistan. He writes, "To me, that experience had to become fictionalized in order for me to make anything remotely related, and the work that came out is probably equally removed from war as it is from art. If it’s true that there’s no middle ground between those two modes of being, then I think that the work that I made is squarely in the middle of that."
