Awamu Biomass Energy is a For-Profit Environmental Enterprise in Africa

Based in Kampala, Uganda, Awamu Biomass is a socially responsible and environmentally aware for-profit enterprise. More specifically, as the organization writes on its website, their mission is "to develop Top-Lit UpDraft (TLUD) gasifier stoves that utilize renewable energy from dry organic waste products, while increasing agricultural profitability and sustainability through environmentally responsible production of fuels."

Awamu -- which comes from the Luganda word "together" -- currently offers four different kinds of stove products: Troika Bingwa, Quad3, TChar and Awamu Institutional Stoves. Fuel includes wood, wood chips, copped wood, maize cobs and uncarbonized briquettes. This is certainly a clean energy maven's dream.

In 2013, Awamu won the SEED Low Carbon Award, which was founded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The social business itself was founded in 2012 and SocialBusiness.org looks forward to seeing what's to come.
