United States-based photographer Freddy Fabris recreated iconic Renaissance paintings using auto mechanics as his subjects. The entire series highlights the mechanics in their natural environment, while striking poses from historically rich artworks.
The photographs are all taken inside a garage, which allowed the artist to make use of the existing props. One highly creative image is that of the 'Last Supper.' This image features numerous seated mechanics, while one single man is standing as Jesus. The significance of this image is in the subtle use of props; the man interpreting Jesus has a hub cap behind his head to mimic a halo, which is seen in the original painting.
This series allowed the artist to investigate how to translate paintings into photography. When Fabris had the idea to use auto mechanics as the subjects, the challenge to embody the original paintings while adding a modernized twist became simplified.
