This App Helps Spot Tell-Tale Signs Of Child and Infant Abuse

The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago has launched a child abuse plausibility assessment app that aims to monitor some of the tell-tale signs of abuse of babies and young children in order to spot potential red flags.

Built by Slingshot, the 'Lurie Children's Child Injury Plausibility Assessment Support Tool' app, or 'LCAST' for short, focuses on specific characteristics of bruising that can be indicative of abuse. The app makes use of a rotating 3D model of a child, with users able to click on different parts of the model to depict where bruises are seen. A questionnaire is then delivered to offer more details about the injuries, with the user then receiving a result that is powered by algorithms directly influenced by published research.

Although the 'LCAST' abuse assessment app cannot make a definitive diagnosis, it aims to spot tell-tale characteristics of bruises that are likely to be caused by child abuse so that medical and social professionals can consider other interventions or more close monitoring.
