Artist Joe Iurato is Changing the Way We See Public Spaces

Artist Joe Iurato creates small realistic-looking wooden figurines and displays them in public places across New Jersey.

Iurato makes these wooden designs from spray painted cutouts that are about 15" in size. His work often depicts people swinging off bridges, leaning against walls or doing various other activities like skateboarding and playing acoustic guitar. All of the characters appear to look life-like and some are personified as artists who are responsible for creating their own surroundings.

Iurato produces a make-believe world for these figurines while igniting curious conversation and stares from people passing by. Each piece is meant to be unpredictable while engaging interest from the public. Iurato wants his work to impact viewers while transacting intimate connections with the public and reminding one to be present in the moment.
