Smartphone-Recycling Robots

'Liam' is an Apple Robot That Takes Phones Apart for Reuse

At its 'Loop You In' event, Apple unveiled a slew of new consumer-facing products, including a small four-inch iPhone SE, an affordable Apple Watch and iPad Pro, as well as an Apple robot for its own use.

The 29-armed robot named 'Liam' was introduced by Lisa Jackson, Apple's VP for environment, who described that the bot is being put to use to disassemble an iPhone's many components. Since Apple is a company that takes care to use durable recyclable products, Liam is put to work in order to extract any salvageable components or recycling materials.

Although there is a growing demand for sustainable products, implementing product recycling programs can be a challenge. However, by lifting the veil and showing what happens to a consumer's smartphone once it is turned in for recycling, this news from Apple may be successful at giving Liam more material to work with.
