Faking Home Movies

Anne Hathaway As a Druggie in ‘Rachel Getting Married'

Anne Hathaway is starring in a new film which, ironically, was actually created to look unprofessional. ‘Rachel Getting Married’ is supposed to look look a home wedding video filmed my a hand held camera.

In the flick, Anne Hathaway stars as trouble-making Kym.  The film follows her fresh out of rehab as she attends her sister Rachel’s wedding. She slips into a role very different from the glamorous, high fashion journalist she played in the Devil Wears Prada.

What fascinated Anne Hathaway most about this new movie was the challenge of the character, but also the filmography.

"That’s the hardest special effect to achieve," she said of the home-film style. "You can’t create it with computers. It takes great writing, great directing and great acting. It takes care and craft and commitment."

The Dallas News makes a good point in saying that even ‘reality’ TV shows don’t look real. They’re filmed with professional cameras and lighting, and not for a second do the images of people on shows like Survivor look like they would have been played off a home camcorder.

Rachel Getting Married starring Anne Hathaway hits theaters December 5.
