Coupled Counterculture Portraits

The Annalisa Hartlaub Counter//Culture Photos Are Alternative

The Counter//Culture photo series by Ohio State University student Annalisa Hartlaub depicts a series of images of the artist and her countercultural equivalent from decades past. Dating back to the 1920s, the portraits document the evolution of feminine dress and style.

In each shot, mainstream appearances are juxtaposed with alternative fashions. This is seen in Hartlaub's evident references to flappers, hipsters and grunge looks. The creative project showcases the acute differences between what's commonly accepted and what's on the fringe of contemporary culture.

While some of the differences are subtle, others are more striking. In both cases, it is apparent that there is always a prevalent form of presentation that is at odds with unorthodox appearances, no matter the point in time.
