Tate & Lyle Expands Its Production of Sugar Alternative Allulose

British food and beverage ingredient manufacturer Tate & Lyle announced that it will be expanding its production of allulose -- a low-calorie fruit-based sweetener -- in an effort to meet the increased global demand for sugar alternatives. Since the company began producing allulose a year ago, demand for the product has already started to exceed supply.

The first phase of the expansion is now underway as Tate & Lyle has begun increasing the production of allulose syrup at its Loudon, Tennessee factory. Meanwhile, the second phase, set for late 2023, will see the company increase its crystalline production.

According to recent studies, allulose contains 70% of the sweetness of classic white sugar but arrives at just 0.4 calories per gram and has almost no effect on blood sugar levels and insulin, making it an ideal substitute for diabetics.
