The 'Allen Integrated Cell' Uses AI to Peer Inside Living Human Cells

Biologists can't often conduct work on living human cells (since people tend to need their living cells for living), but the new Allen Integrated Cell from the Allen Institute uses predictive AI to accurately peer inside cells as they behave while alive. The program gives biologists the ability to effectively look at a complete, functioning cell, whereas in the past they would have to make deductions based on one part of a cell at a time.

To create the Allen Integrated Cell, scientists at the Allen Institute injected specific structures within cells with fluorescent material. The scientists then trained a neural network to recognize the patterns in how each of these structures behaved, and the AI was able to create a holistic model based on everything that it had learned.
