Aleph Farms, an Israeli food technology startup, is the first company to successfully create lab-grown meat in space. The organization was able to grow meat on the International Space Station -- located 248 miles away from the earth -- without the use of any natural resources.
The meat's bovine cells were initially harvested on Earth and brought to space where they were cultured into small-scaled muscle tissues via a 3D bioprinter. The process recreates the natural muscle-tissues regeneration that takes place in a cow's body. "We are proving that cultivated meat can be produced anytime, anywhere, in any condition," said Didier Toubia, co-founder and chief executive of Aleph Farms. This new feat could become the new "norm" for providing food to astronauts living on space stations.
