The Air Gini Seating Plan Reflects Income Distribution in the US

'Air Gini' is a unique project that uses the idea of airplane seating to highlight the issue of income inequality in the US. While many people know that unequal wealth distribution is a pressing issue, this project provides a visual way to conceptualize the problem.

Air Gini is an income-based airplane seating plan designed by Kieran Healy. The plan reflects the seating chart of an Airbus A330-300, with space allotted to each class' share of income earned. These figures were calculated by taking the proportion of passengers on a regular plane and then calculating the exact income of each group. Interestingly, 3.5 percent of the plane's population receives 35 percent of the space, while 80 percent of the passengers are allotted just 50 percent of the space.

Air travel is already somewhat divided based on income, making the project a unique way to visualize the issue of income inequality in America.
