Suspended Rainbow Artwork

This Aerial Artwork Cascades Colorful Patterns Above Boston's Streets

Janet Echelman created this captivating aerial artwork that is suspended above Boston's streets. Echelman titled this project 'As if it Were Already Here.' In the daylight, the suspended artwork cascades its ethereal shape with reflecting features to captivate the passersby. By night this magically rainbow-infused tapestry broadcasts florescent colors that can be seen throughout the city.

This artwork is much too large for a gallery, as it weighs in at 2,000 pounds. The entire mesh aerial artwork is comprised of 542,000 knots woven together by hand. When suspended overhead, this massive artwork looks like a vibrant illusion of glowing deep sea fish or enhanced Northern Lights being dramatically recreated for Boston.

This artist created similar piece of art in major cities across the globe such as Sydney, Seattle and Vancouver.
