Customizable Adaptive Toys

The UNF Adaptive Toy Project Designs Cars for Disabled Children

These adaptive toys developed by engineering and physical therapy students at the University of North Florida (UNF) are for children with disabilities. The grant-funded UNF Adaptive Toy Project designs customized electric cars for kids to ride and adapts toys off the shelf for young ones with special needs.

Every one of the adaptive toys are individually customizable to suit the child's needs, giving youth with severe disabilities (including Cerebral Palsy) more options when it comes to play things. UNF students take a hands-on approach, meeting the child and their parents or caregivers, visiting their school and attending therapy sessions to best understand the present challenges. This level of dedication significantly increases the value of the toys, but they are given to families for free.

Customization for disability-related challenges is successful on an individual bases, but also presents issues of scale.
