Accessible Game Controller Packaging

The Xbox Adaptive Controller Comes in Easily Opened Packaging

Packaging for technology rarely changes but Microsoft has decided to completely retool the box for the Xbox Adaptive Controller to commit to an accessible focus. According to Microsoft's packaging designer Mark Weiser, the box for the Adaptive Controller was created using 3D printing and other techniques. Several prototypes were then made and developed in tandem with the controller.

After receiving feedback on the controllers, Microsoft made the decision to include several loops and leverage points to help when unboxing the Adaptive Controller. A sturdy piece of ribbon is used to open the box's top flap and is designed specifically to be grabbed with teeth or looped around a hand. The controller itself can be lifted easily out of the box with the flat of a hand or a foot thanks to the large amount of negative space below it.
