Aaron Cheng Creates a Concept to Help Save Space in Urban Areas

The 'Parking + Housing' concept was created by San Francisco-based designer Aaron Cheng as a solution to utilize urban space. As the density of major metropolises increases, along with the amount of commuters from the suburbs, there is a need to provide living space along with spots to park cars. Cheng shows the possibility of creating a building that combines the two in an innovation that acts as parking garage for the daytime and returns to a residential space at night.

The idea came to Cheng because he realized that most of the day these residences remain empty. By creating a structure that can expand and compress, it will strategically utilize the space. In order to make this possible, Cheng believes that the building could use pneumatics.

Parking + Housing is Aaron Cheng's submission to this year’s James Dyson Awards, and will open up possibilities for creating space-friendly architecture for urban spaces.
