Taiwanese Farmers Cut Costs and Pollution by Training Their Livestock

Taiwanese farmers have recently begun an using an unusual tactic to reduce the water usage, expenses and mortality rate of their pigs.

The process involves installing a metal grate in the middle of their pig pens, upon which pigs can do their business. By keeping the rest of the pen clean, farmers help their pigs quickly acclimatize to the designated bathroom spot. Farmers have to use far less water to clean out the pig pen than they normally would by potty-training their pigs; they also cut down on the amount of harmful runoff from pig feces. Taiwanese farmers could save the country over 75,000 gallons of water a day if every pig in the country used this system.
