Sweden’s Returpack/Pantamera became the first deposit return system in Europe to receive RecyClass certification for its PET bottle sorting process, verifying that the recycled material is traceable, food-safe and suitable for use in new food and beverage packaging. The certification confirms compliance with EU regulation 2022/1616, which governs the collection, pre-treatment and traceability of recycled plastics intended for food-contact applications.
The certified process covers the collection, sorting and quality-control stages of Returpack’s recycling chain and was independently audited by QHSEcert GmbH. Because each returned container is identified at barcode level, the deposit return system creates a highly traceable and uncontaminated stream of PET material that can be documented throughout the recycling process.
For consumers and beverage brands, the certification increases confidence that recycled PET collected through deposit return systems can safely re-enter food-grade packaging supply chains.

Returpack/Pantamera PET bottle Earnned Its RecyClass Certification
Trend Themes
-
Certified Food-grade Recycling — Independent certification of recycled PET streams creates new value in packaging markets by turning compliance, safety and traceability into competitive differentiators.
-
Barcode-level Material Traceability — Granular container identification enables cleaner recycling loops where data-rich waste streams support premium pricing, regulatory assurance and closed-loop packaging models.
-
Deposit Return Infrastructure — High-integrity collection systems are becoming strategic supply sources for food-safe recycled plastics as brands seek reliable alternatives to virgin PET.
Industry Implications
-
Beverage Packaging — Food-safe recycled PET certification expands the potential for bottles to move through circular supply chains without compromising consumer trust or regulatory compliance.
-
Waste Management — Audited sorting and quality-control systems position recycling operators as providers of verified raw materials rather than commodity waste processors.
-
Regulatory Technology — Digital documentation and traceability platforms gain relevance as recycled material compliance becomes a measurable requirement across food-contact packaging supply chains.
