This 3D-Printed Dress Assumes Another Dimension When Hinged for Movement

The fashion industry thrives on old and new at once, constantly throwing back to antique styles and continuously experimenting with cutting-edge technologies. Even those with little interest in clothing will be able to appreciate this 3D-printed dress, for it's as much of a scientific feat as it is stylish.

The team from Nervous System worked hard to figure out how to use a 3D printer to produce malleable material. The hard plastic that usually comes out of the machine would not allow for the movement, the stretching or the expanding of the human body, making it completely impractical for garments. The solution to fixing the 3D-printed dress during its manufacturing was to add another dimension in the form of flexible hinges. Nylon is the binding agent of the Kinematics Dress, allowing the chic latticed textile to swing and flow in motion. It was on display at CES 2015.
