This 3D Obama Bust Marks the First Time a President Has Been 3D Scanned

As Part of the Smithsonian's 3D scanning and imaging program entitled 'Smithsonian X 3D,' this 3D Obama portrait was unveiled at the White House on June 18 of this year.

The detailed bust and face mold of the 44th President of the United States of America is not only an intriguing work of art, but it also marks the "first time in history a sitting President has been 3D scanned." A team led by the Smithsonian used the Light Stage face scanner to capture President Obama's entire facial likeness; while handheld 3D scanners and SLR cameras gathered the necessary data to create an accurate bust. Graphic experts from the company Autodesk were tasked with using the data and scans to create "high-resolution models," which were then printed using 3D Systems’ selective laser sintering printers.

The President Barack Obama bust and life mask will become part of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
