3D Police Cameras

This High-Tech Security Camera Allows the Police to Take 3D Mugshots

Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department is currently testing high-tech security cameras that allow the police to take 3D mugshots. Despite the fact that Japan has some of the lowest crime rates in the world, the technology presents a new way to appraoch criminal photography.

As of April 2016, all of the 102 police stations in Tokyo will be equipped with 3D cameras. These cameras will snap photos of suspected criminals and morph their face into 3D mugshots. The images will then stored in a national database that can be used to catch criminals. The topographical renderings will give the police unprecedented details of each suspect's face, thereby making it possible to identify someone in bad lighting or from an awkward angle.

Although the technology is only being implemented in Japan, other countries may soon employ similar high-tech security systems.
