San Francisco's 311 App Lets Residents Report Homeless People in Distress

The 311 app is a new venture, launched by San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, that uses the city's existing public information and assistance app to allow residents to report homeless people who may be in distress and in need of assistance.

The app is being designed to enable citizens to help the city's huge homeless population get access to the various health, well-being and community service programs that the city offers.

Ultimately, the 311 app encourages citizens to play an active role in helping the homeless without forcing themselves into uncomfortable or unfamiliar positions. "Today, we take a step forward as a compassionate city, providing this new way for constituents to let us know about a person who needs a well-being check," the mayor said. "Walking past someone suffering on the streets does not reflect our San Francisco values. Our residents want to help, and we are providing easy ways for them to do that."
