24% of Americans siad spending time on online relationships through avatars in Second Life is a satisfactory substitute for a significant other.

Zogby and 463 Communications conducted the poll of over 9,000 adults. Singles said 31% could use the web as a companion. There was no significant difference between male and female, but 31% of "progressives" answered affirmative, while 18% of "very conservative" would consider the web to be a substitute
