The 20th BMW Art Car Was Unveiled at the Guggenheim Museum

The 20th BMW Art Car was unveiled at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The BMW Art Car Project was introduced by the French racecar driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain, inviting artists to use a car's exterior as a canvas. Past BMW Art Cars were created by renowned artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Olafur Eliasson. For this year's edition of the auto ritual, the New York-based artist Julie Mehretu was selected.

The 20th BMW Art Car is the BMW M Hybrid V8 race car and Julie Mehretu will have creative freedom to embellish the 640-hp car before it races in the 24-Hour race of Le Mans in June 2024. About the protect, the artist shares that "[she has] loved cars for most of [her[ life, as toys, as objects, as possibilities. It is from that space that [she is] really excited to be working on the next BMW Art Car more than anything."
