Tactile Athlete Awards

Lin Cheung's 2012 Paralympics Medals Inspired by Goddess of Victory

There is perhaps no better inspiration for the 2012 Paralympics Medals than the Goddess of Victory, Nike herself. Considering that she has been depicted on the medals since 2004 makes her an even more appropriate draw for inspiration. This mythical influence is present in the texture and grain of the medal's surfaces, which happens to resemble an imagined close up of a section of Nike’s outstretched wing, representing "flight, power, and lightness." On the other side of the 2012 Paralympics Medals is a mold taken from the chest of the The Nike of Paionios, symbolizing "the heart of victory."

The 2012 Paralympics Medals were designed by 40-year-old jewelry artist Lin Cheung, whose concept was chosen among a select group of artists invited to create next year's award.
