Surreal Fairytale Sketches

These Watercolor Illustrations of Tumbelina are Breathtaking

Korean graphic illustrator Dani Soon created these breathtakingly surreal watercolor illustrations of Tumbelina to accompany the traditional text of the fairytale. The images are drawn in a traditional Minhwa style that beautifully juxtaposes east and west cultures with a touch of surrealism.

Tumbelina is the popular tale of a miniature girl that wanders through life looking for her one true love. Along her adventures with an oversized world Tumbelina encounters many adventures with animals like mice, toads and fish. Soon's images beautifully capture Tumbelina as a classical Victorian girl positioned in a world of gigantic flowers, fruit and inanimate objects. The painting style incorporates flat images and bold and earthy color tones with an effective use of white space. Many of the animal sketches have a clear Asian artistic aesthetic to them.
