Google Data Center Approves Waste Water Cooling System

An Atlanta, Georgia Google data center has opted for a new waste water cooling system. In line with the company’s sustainability focus, the center has shifted its operation procedures by endorsing this ecologically sound project.

The Georgia Google center was created in 2007. Since that date, the edifice has been using potable water as a cooling source. In recognition of the inefficiency that is inherent in a process that uses drinking water to cool machinery, the folks at Google decided that a systematic overhaul was necessary.

As a team effort between the Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority (WSA) and Google, the data center will execute a "sidestream" treatment scheme wherein recycled water will be utilized. The sidestream plan will also sterilize and filter the water, some of which will be released into the region’s Chattahoochee River. In addition to promoting an ecological business concept, this purification operation will actually produce cleaner water than the WSA does.
