The New Valentino Couture Collection Blends High-Art and Fashion

The latest Valentino Couture Collection, which was revealed via a dramatic, multi-artist installation in Venice, Italy, proves that fashion can be high-art, and vice versa. In fact, it was Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli's aim to blend the two-dimensional nature of painting with the tactility of clothing to produce an all-new fashion experience.

Moreover, the collection and its accompanying show come as a result of a collobartion between over a dozen artists including Joel S Allen, Anastasia Bay, Benni Bosetto, Katrin Bremermann, Guglielmo Castelli, and more. The pieces in the collection come in a range of rich, sensuous colors, drawing inspiration from Italian oil paintings. Even brush stroke techniques informed the design of various garments.

According to Piccioli, he chose Venice as the location for his show because it "genuinely and spontaneously generates vibrations on art, theatre, music, architecture, cinema, and everything that has to do with creativity."
