Anonton Polyakov's latest project, 'Transnistria Conglomerate,' follows the inhabitants of Transistria, a state of Moldova that identifies itself as pro-Russian.
Moldova received independence from the Soviet Union after a 1992 conflict that ended in a ceasefire. Transnistria has become the home of separatists who continue to support the Russian government. As such, Transnistria exists in an in-between state; it declares itself as independent, a fact that has remained largely unrecognized by the remainder of the world. Despite its best efforts, the state has not been able to formally become a part of Russia, though the country continues to support them.
Polyakov's mission is to capture life in political limbo. More than pro-Russian, communism propaganda, he wishes to convey the variety of the people and lives they lead, including the newest generation and their increasingly apolitical views.
