This Television Transmission Center Feature a Unique Grid Design

Santiago-based design firm 'Umwelt' teamed up with architect Juan Manuel Sepúlveda to design and renovate a local transmission center. While concrete is not usually considered the most attractive building material, it can actually be used to create beautiful and unexpected designs. This project demonstrates that concrete can be used to turn an ordinary building into an architectural marvel.

'Transmission Central' is located at the peak of San Cristóbal Hill in Santiago, Chile. As part of an effort to renovate the old building, Umwelt teamed up with Sepúlveda. The designers began by adding a second story to the transmission center and extending the ground floor by about 190 meters. The designers then wrapped the entire building in a layer of perforated concrete. The concrete shell reassembles a grid and gives the building a contemporary look.

The project demonstrates that even an ordinary equipment building can become a work of art.
