Practically Elegant Furniture

Torsten Sherwood Creates Furniture Inspired by the Shaker Movement

Torsten Sherwood was inspired by the 19th-century Shaker movement when he created this range of simple, no-nonsense wooden furniture. The designer borrows the practical, prudent values of the religious sect, which is known for developing a craft movement in which proportion and form take precedence over elaborate design.

Sherwood had to show considerable constraint when fashioning these pieces. The collection focused heavily on understanding the construction aspect. Sherwood explains, "Given that making is so fundamental to design and architecture, I admire this common sense approach and I hope to show, as they have, that a technically elegant solution can be aesthetically elegant too."

Pieces include the Throne Stool and Pew Stool, both which innovate traditional timber detailing to create a V-shaped seat with a stable framework. Sherwood describes the process as a collision of construction and poetry.
