Bald Fat Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder

A fat Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder may be enough to renew the stars tainted stardom.  Although Tom Cruise has fallen out of favor with his extreme Scientology beliefs, fans are lifting him back up to stardom after what is being praised as a stellar cameo appearance.

According to Yahoo, searches for ‘Tom Cruise Tropic Thunder’ jumped nearly 1000% yesterday, and there was an infinite spike for ‘tom cruise FAT tropic thunder’.  Nice.

Part of the hype was driven by legal threats made by Cruise’s lawyers to anyone publishing the picture of Tom as a bald fat man.  Accordingly, most of the celeb blogs, and larger news blogs like Huffington Post, were forced to pull down their fat Tom picture. So, we’ve chosen instead to use a photoshopped rendition of what a fat tom cruise would look like…

So does coming back as a fat character help to reinvent your status?  If so, is it because ‘larger than life’ characters are always more lovable?  If so, what is the underlying reason?  Perhaps less-than-perfect bodies remind us more of ourselves and a fat Tom Cruise makes him seem more like an ordinary, approachable human being.
