Aya Takano’s ‘To Lose is to Gain’ is Reflective

Aya Takano’s current exhibit at Paris’ Galerie Perrotin delves into the artists take on Japan’s recent earthquake. A Saitama native herself, Takano has in the past examined themes relevant to her nation with a focus on anime, manga and consumerism. Her perspective on the tragic subject was as such a natural match for the upscale French hub.

Galerie Perrotin’s Takano installation showcases her paintings in an unusual manner. Strings drooping from the ceiling are attached to flat depictions of young women, many of which stand close to diamond-shaped wall hangings. And while the scene may be chaotic in the best sense of the word, there is order here. Takano maintains her preoccupation with Japan’s past, present and future in a linear sense.
