Mexican designer Renata Souza Luque is hoping to help children with Type 1 diabetes with the Thomy toolkit. The Thomy toolkit was first presented at the Design Indaba conference in Cape Town, and was designed as a fun and easy way to administer insulin. The toolkit is made up of an easy-to-carry kit, a child-friendly insulin pen and a set of temporary tattoos. The temporary tattoos in the case are designed to make insulin injections safe and easy, while the pen is designed to make injections more manageable for a child.
Souza Luque was inspired to create the Thomy toolkit after her seven-year-old cousin Tomas was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Souza Luque decided to create the product after watching the struggle her cousin went through and saw a need for an easier process. Tomas was the first tester for the toolkit, however he was not sent any instruction manuals. The reason for this was to ensure the intuitive nature of the kit and to remove the medical stigma around the product.
