The Third Generation Pi-Pop Bike Charges a Supercapacitor with Energy Regeneration

The Third-Generation ebike from Pi-POP is a battery-free electric bicycle that uses a supercapacitor to store electricity. Unlike conventional ebikes that rely on lithium-ion batteries, the Pi-POP ebike does not need to be plugged in to charge. Instead, it regenerates energy while pedaling, coasting downhill or braking. The supercapacitor is made of common materials such as aluminum, carbon, cellulose and polymer, which are relatively easy to recycle or process. The Pi-POP ebike aims to reduce the ecological footprint of micromobility by avoiding the environmental and social downsides of lithium extraction.

The Pi-POP ebike has a 250w electric motor that provides pedal assistance up to 25km/h, the mandatory limiter for electric bicycles. The bike is calibrated to climb 500 meter long slopes with a 10% incline, making it suitable for city riding. The bike has an infinite range as long as there is a mix of flat and downhill terrain. The supercapacitor has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, which is higher than a lithium-ion battery. The Pi-POP ebike is available for purchase directly from the manufacturer in France from September 2023, at a price of 2,450€ (around £2,100).
