The Skywhale by Patricia Piccinini Looks Like a Mythical Creature

The Skywhale looks like something straight out of a fantasy book. In fact, it might bring people's minds to Falkor the Luckdragon from 'The Neverending Story' or Appa from the cartoon series 'Avatar.' Resembling a strange and awesome mythical creature, it inflates and flies high above land and sea to the delight of both the artist and her audience.

Created by Patricia Piccinini, the Skywhale is essentially a very large, very animalistic hot air balloon. Commissioned by The Centenary Of Canberra, it has been likened to a cross between a turtle, teats and prehistoric fish by Beautiful Decay. The Australian artist reveals, "For me, the Skywhale is a work that celebrates the wonder of nature."

The Skywhale is set to make rounds in Australia during 2013, so people should keep their eyes peeled.
