Text-to-911 services were first announced by the FCC back in 2012, but this service is now being rolled out in a few American cities in different states.
This new way to call for emergency assistance is just like dialling 911, except instead of speaking your emergency and location, you type it. It's not yet been implemented in all areas, but people will be able to send photos with texts as well.
The service launched today for mobile providers like AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon, and by the end of this year, it will be required that text providers support Text-to-911. Even if you're in one of the areas that's not covered, this service will be introduced to more US cities over the rest of the year.
