Terps & Co.'s Zero-Proof Spirits Mimic a Booze-Induced Buzz

New Zealand-based startup Terps & Co. offers a range of alcohol-free terpene spirits designed specifically to help customers "lose the booze but no the feels."

Unlike most other zero-proof alternatives, which look to recreate the taste, aroma, and texture of alcohol, Terps & Co's products deliver unique sensory properties that closely mimic the "buzz" of booze. Currently, the brand offers three spirits playfully named 'Rum-esque,' 'Gin-like,' and 'Whiskey-ish.'

Of course, the key ingredient to each bottling is terpenes, an aromatic compound found naturally in fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs. Like alcohol, terpenes interrupt neurotransmitters in the brain while also increasing oxygen in the bloodstream, creating a relaxing and uplifting sensation.

"This is the world's first product and something I see as the second generation of alcohol alternatives where the product, once consumed, actually has a positive effect on the mind and body," said James Crow, Terps & Co. Co-Founder.
