Artist Paul Kaptein Creates Glitchy Works that Play with Perception

The surreal wood sculptures of Paul Kaptein rethinks the traditional art form in very unique and contemporary ways. Although the creations are as full of details and depth as similar works of art, the subject matter differs significantly. In one case, a meditating monk appears to be experiencing what can only be described as a computer glitch. Another instance sees a realistic skull with a strangely elongated back.

Disturbing and imaginative, the surreal wood sculptures are all made by hand. All of the Australian artist's works revolve around his interest in portraying "the immaterial as an expression of the overt reliance (and ignorance of the composition) of materialism as a somewhat naive description of reality." Although the pieces seem cut and dry, there is much room for individual interpretation as well.
