The 'MaSoChain' is Designed For Minimally Invasive Surgeries

A group of scientists and engineers working out of ETH Zurich over in Switzerland have developed a high-tech surgical tool that is designed to be able to assist with minimally invasive surgery.

The 'MaSoChain' surgical tool, which is short for 'magnetic soft-robotic chain,' was developed by a team of innovators led by doctoral researcher Hongri Gu. The 'MaSoChain' is effectively a self-folding tool that comprises 3D-printed instruments that are connected via flexible elastic and also feature miniature magnets. This device is effectively able to be used in conjunction with a catheter but can then be unfolded into the required shape to carry out the specific surgical procedure. Once the procedure is completed, the instrument can be folded back into its narrow form in order to be easily retrieved.

This unique design could herald further innovation in the creation of surgical tools capable of carrying out minimally invasive procedures on the stomach and intestine.
