Coffee-Based Construction Materials

Scientists are Now Using Spent Coffee Grounds to Make Cement

Last year, researchers at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, announced that they have come up with a way to revolutionize the construction industry by repurposing spent coffee grounds. While still in the early stages, the process could help to reduce significant amounts of coffee waste and create greener roads.

In an effort to create more sustainable roadways, researchers at Swinburne University of Technology combined spent coffee grounds with the byproducts of steel and the combustion of coal. A geopolymerization process was then used to create a construction material that was strong enough to be used as a foundation layer located beneath the road's surface. The researchers thus concluded that implementing the process would help to reduce the amount of coffee grounds ending up in landfills and the demand on construction materials.
